Energy
In 2022, state government’s energy use per square foot increased slightly compared to 2020 and 2021 but was consistent with pre-COVID levels in 2018 and 2019. In general, natural gas use increased while electricity use decreased.
Goal
Reduce energy use per square foot 30% by 2027 compared to a 2017 adjusted baseline.
Accomplishments
The Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) has been implementing energy conservation measures in their building, like installing efficient LED lighting and motion sensors and targeting behavior changes to continue using less energy.
The Department of Administration manages a $5 million revolving loan fund state agencies can use for energy conservation and improvement projects. The revolving loan fund financed four projects at agencies for efficient lighting and equipment.
Barriers
Buildings with residents that are used 24 hours a day, every day, are the greatest challenge and opportunity for reducing energy use. These buildings are our Veterans homes, state hospitals, and correctional facilities.
Agencies leasing space have limited influence to implement energy efficiency projects. However, some agencies like Minnesota Housing and the Department of Public Safety include Green Lease provisions to implement positive changes.
